 PCOS AWARENESS month

Verity launched PCOS Awareness Week in November 2010. Over 10 years later and our week has become a month, in line with our US and international counterparts. Our aim is to simply raise awareness of PCOS, educate others about the condition and hopefully raise a little money so we can continue providing conferences, information and support.

It’s pretty hard to understand PCOS unless you have it or know someone that does. Although it's estimated that 1 in 10 women of reproductive age have PCOS, it’s so easy to feel isolated or that no one else understands what you are going through. It's also estimated that 70% of those with the condition don't know they have it, and you can't treat and manage what you don't know you have.

Awareness month is our chance to make some noise, support each other and spread the word so others can get diagnosed too. As a volunteer organisation, we rely on our community to help us do this and there are lots of ways to get involve

Paint one nail purple

Picture
Every September we ask people to paint one nail purple to represent the estimated 1 in 10 affected by PCOS. It’s something that is easy, fun and eye-catching. It can spark a conversation with friends, family, colleagues and more. It’s easy to  share on social media and to get others involved.

Make a Move for PCOS

Picture
We all know that lifestyle management is a big part of PCOS management but it can sometimes make exercise and movement feel like a chore and something we have to do rather than something we want to do. By making a move we want our community to reconnect with the idea of movement for the joy of movement but also as a way to support your mental and physical health. So why not make a commitment to yourself in September to regularly do movement that makes you feel good. It could be:
  • Hitting 10k steps every day or doing a distance challenge
  • Taking on the #100forPCOS challenge and walking, running, or cycling 100 miles over the month
  • Starting a 30 day yoga challenge, something that has been shown in studies to help lower cortisol levels and have a positive effect on hormone balance
  • Dancing in your front room, kitchen, bedroom or wherever you feel comfortable every day
  • Taking on a squat, press up or crunches challenge if you’re into H.I.I.T. or resistance training
  • Or anything else that you enjoy!

PCOS Photo Challenge

Every year we create a 30 day photo challenge with a different prompt for every day of the month. You can take part anywhere on social media and use each prompt to talk about a different aspect of PCOS and what it means to you. We are all so different and we’ve found this really helps others find information and a supportive community especially when they’re newly diagnosed.
We’ll release the new Photo Challenge graphic in August, keep an eye out for it on our social media channels (@VerityPCOS).

Or maybe something different….

  • Challenge yourself to do something new (it doesn't have to be fitness related) and get sponsored to do so
  • Organise a coffee morning (in person or virtual) in your local community to raise awareness and funds
  • Share one, or more, of our social posts below tagging @VerityPCOS and using the hashtag #PCOSAwareness
  • If you're creative and crafty you could use your skills to raise awareness e.g. yarn bombing, chalk pavement art, something to stick in your window
  • If you have a product that you sell you may wish to donate a percentage of your sales to Verity in September and share some of our social posts with your audience
  • Get in touch with a local business or landmark who can put a poster up or change their lights for PCOS
  • Or do something completely different, it's completely up to you!

You can choose something that takes an hour, a day or the whole month. Whatever you choose is fine. You will be raising the profile of PCOS, supporting a small volunteer run charity and maybe helping us raise some much needed funds to continue our work. You will make a massive difference whatever you choose to do and however you choose to do

Fundraising

If you want to get sponsored whilst raising awareness you can set up a Just Giving page. When you’ve done that you can let us know you’re raising money by filling in our fundraising form. We’ll even send you a PCOS Awareness wristband as a thank you!
